Abigail

Olivet (retired)
The dog that loves kids, paints with her paws and can read!

Yes, it is true, this dog can read and she definitely loves children. Abigail is a highly trained Canine Companions for Independence Facility Dog teamed with art teacher Dan Galloway, at Dale Cassens School (DCS), in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Besides teaching full time at DCS, Dan and Abigail travel to other schools in St. Lucie County teaching children with special needs a special "Art/Abigail" curriculum. Dan and Abigail will also be modifying and hopefully improving a reading and writing program originally developed with Olivet , designed to improve academic performance they call "REWARD," Reading Enhancement and Writing Advancement with a Reading Dog. To learn more about this program and all that Dan and Olivet did and what Abigail will do, we invite you to explore this web site.

Besides being a place for our students to showcase their experiences with Abigail and Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), We want this web site to be a place for our students to exhibit their works of art and experience a great increase in self-esteem in the process. We also anticipate that as time goes on and our web site develops, children will become more interested in this form of technology and begin to actually participate in the production of this evolving medium of communication. For teachers we will be adding a lesson plan component where we will post our most successful lessons and it is our hope that interested teachers will share their best with us as well.
Special notice: We are in the process of editing this site. Please notice that in many instances the information found here, (especially the pictures in the photo album) refers to "Olivet", Olivet was the original artdog. For eight wonderful years she was my special companion, working by my side each day serving children with disabilities. Olivet is now happily retired and I have a new CCI dog, "Abigail". Nothing will really change because what we do is all about a program, about "CCI" and children that are special. Yes, the dog has changed but the program continues virtually unchanged. We will continue to edit this site but Olivet will always be here..
In St. Lucie County we are proud of our special children, and we want to celebrate with them their wonderful creations.
We are proud to be associated with CCI and , VSA arts of Florida. Please visit these wonderful web sites.
Thank You All!
Enjoy!
